Top 10 things you should know for refereeing high school games:
- Laws: We are all playing full U19 law.
- Start time: Games start at 4:45pm or as soon as the referee says the game will start.
- Playing time: Playing 17.5 minute quarters to make the 70 minute maximum playing time for U19 players. 1 minute between first two and last two quarters, and a maximum of 10 minute half-time:
Q1-(1min)-Q2-(10min max)-Q3-(1min)-Q4
- Kick-offs? At the beginning of the game and to re-start the second half, there will be a kick-off. However, when continuing with the 2nd quarter, the game shall resume at the place where the game left off in the end of the 1st quarter. Likewise, the 4th quarter shall begin where the game left off in the end of the 3rd quarter.
- MAYDAY: Confirm that both teams have been trained in the MAYDAY procedure. If one or both teams do not know the MAYDAY procedure, the game will be a default and NOT be played – loss to the team who is not properly trained with Safe Rugby and the MAYDAY procedure.
- Brains: Mouthguards are mandatory for all players on the pitch.
- Players: To reiterate Law on players’ clothing, all jewelery, such as rings and earrings and including, but not limited to: eyebrow piercings, nose piercings, lip piercings, neck piercing studs and rings… shall be removed, not taped, before entering the field of play.
- Bad Tackles: Be strict on dangerous tackles. Swing tackles are dangerous. Minimum sanction: Yellow Card / Sin Bin the swing tackler, and PK to the non-offending team.
- Send Offs: If you have to send a player off for any reason, including foul play or unsportsmanlike conduct, after your game please immediately complete the Send Off Report and immediately send to: 1) the correct school league organizer (PUBLIC game to Scott Sinclair or METRO game to Norma Smith; 2) Mike Dowell, ERU Discipline Director; finally, 3) Rugby Alberta for a provincial record of the send off.
