2010 Red Card Project

(last updated Oct 31/10 kg)

What are the red card trends in the ERURS territory? Are the nature of offenses which attract the red card changing? Are there any trends which we should look for, in teams, divisions or players and referees? We decided to look at red card reports over three complete seasons, randomly chosen, between 2003 and 2010. We used 2003 because of the completeness of the information and two other complete seasons.

The games looked at range from ASAA local high school, AJRA North junior games (U11-U21), and the ERU senior season – including the complete AC and AWP cycles each year; these divisions add up to a total of 1465 games over the three seasons, +/- 5% error. The reports that we used were only the ones that we could get our hands on, so naturally there could be more reports. However, the trends in the statistics are very interesting.

The reports were gathered from sources such as the administration of the Edmonton Rugby Union, Rugby Alberta, ERURS and RAMOA referees societies. Due to the serious nature and recognizable details of the offenses, all raw statistics will be kept absolutely confidential.

However, with reports from combined years and summaries we can still glean important information. Please find the statistics sumamry here:

Recommendations for the future

This summarizing of past data gives a clear view of what has happened in the past. The information gathered in a new specifc project might be even more useful by looking at three complete and consecutive years to see if there are changes or consistent trends over the three consecutive seasons.
