FLIRR is a sponsored project of the InMotion Network, for the Women Take the Lead program, with funding provided by the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation and Heritage Canada. In this, we have the distinct opportunity to train a large number of young individuals already committed to the great game of rugby: the U17 Alberta wmens representatiove team. The girls will spend a full day learning more about leadership, decision making, goal setting, all while learning to officiate the very game they identify with and experience success in: Rugby Union.
The 2010 FLIRR Project syllabus will be following the iRB Level 1 curriculum, with the addition of four (4) leadership modules interspersed. We will also have a game at the end where the new referees will be able to practice in the middle or as assistants.
The syllabus takes about 8 hours to complete, plus a short lunch break. We will begin the day at 9am and finish – including feedback, evaluation and exam – by 5:30pm.
We typically mix the more chatty areas with the practical application so it is not all talk, then all action. We have discussion sections, video clips, practical movement drills, and so on. We do include a short open book Law Exam for participants to complete, it is just to help the new officials get used to the Law Book and thinking about situations before the field experience.
The great part is that we will be incorporating leadership modules as well:
- giving and receiving feedback.
- developing leadership qualities and behaviours, as well as the importance of service to the community.
- ethics and decisiopn making.
- decision making, and positive self-talk.
- dealing with conflict, diplomacy and constructive criticism.
At the end of the day, the girls will have had their introduction to refereeing theory, and will have the opportunity to get some practicle experience in the exercises prepared for each section. As well, they will become better players having the understanding of law and the game. These girls will be able to referee U12 and U14 games, as well as be Assistant Referees to any level of senior or junior game. The ultimate outcome would be to have these girls continue on as Women Officials. From start to future opportunities, this will be good for all levels of rugby.
