TnT: Training New Touchies. Updated as of July 5, 2010. kg
For the 2010 Alberta Summer Games held up in Berwyn, we have created a new Touch Judging certification course. Since the games are so far away from any “nest” of certified rugby union Referees, and as it would not be cost effective to send many match officials so north, we took the lead from SSW who had the idea of certifying several touch judges in the Peace area in order to properly support the 7s rugby tournament. Great idea – so we made it happen with her help and initiative.

The workshop went so well that we hope to be able to have the opportunity again next year, or any time for any group of people who are interested in being better touch judges for their club and high school games.
The workshop is four (4) hours, which include the following sections:
- Role of the Touch Judge compared with Assistant Referee
- Getting to know the Ground – lines, areas, & their importance to the game
- No gain in ground compared with Gain in ground for lineout location
- Communication between Referee & Touch Judges
- Signals: Referee and Touch Judge
- Triangulations to know: touch, scrum, kick-off, drop-out, PK & FK, conversions, etc.
- Field practical exercises
- Assessment & personal feedback
Important note: this workshop does not make the individual able to be an empowered Touch Judge, meaning after this course you will not able to call foul play or assist the Referee as Level 1 or Level 2 certified match officials in the Assistant Referee role do. If you would like to become an empowered Assisstant Referee you must take at least the Level 1 Officiating course.
Cost: $20 per person, this includes instruction, workbook, flag (1), notebook, and exam certificate. The course will not run with less than 4 people.
