To become a certified Match Official, these are the steps:
- Be interested.
- Take an Officials Level 1 or Officials Level 2 course for theory.
- Referee a few youth games to get practical experience.
- Referee a game supported by a Referee Coach for technical improvement.
- Continue learning with Education Seminars.
- Attend the annual Safe Rugby sessions held in the spring.
- Referee tournaments, or high school games, or minis and juniors, and senior games.
- Improve officiating performance using visualization, reflective practice, and goal setting.

Financial Details
Someone said to me the other night, “Now, what about… ?” Absolutely. Let’s get down to the brass tacks, shall we? You will receive an honorarium for all games for which you officiate as a certified Match Official. These funds are to cover your local travel, gym passes, kit and boots costs, continued education, and that sort of thing.
Money out: about $100 for Level 1 and $150 for Level 2.
- You will pay the ERURS about $100 for the Level 1 course.
- Now, as of 2010: if you pay the fee and then…
- actually referee “regularly” … we are talking more than 5 times a season
- we will give you that money back.
- and… give you the amount per game officiated.
Money in: as of 2010, you will receive an amount for each game that you officiate; the rates differ depending on level and match official role. Again, this is to help cover your expenses that you incur as a referee.
- Referee high school season game: $20 per game
- Referee tournament 15s game: $15 per game
- Referee tournament 7s game: $10 per game (excluding Jasper 7s)
- Referee AJRA U12 festival: $40 for the 1.5h festival
- Referee AJRA U14 or U16 festival: $50 for the 2.0h festival
- Referee AJRA U18 or U19 game: $40 for the 1.5h game
- Referee ERU senior game: $40 per game
- AR or 4-5-6 for ERU senior game: $20 per game
- We do not receive honorariums for any tours or representative game officiating.
